Don’t be fooled by your IT company selling you “We also do phones”
Just stop and think for a minute, what would you do if you had a tooth ache? Call your doc or call your dentist?
You see the would be phone systems (IT people) have been exposed to are Jonny come lately cheap and cheerful systems badly poor on telephony features desperately trying to replicate 40 years of global telephony development, falling well short of the mark due to their inherent lack of telephony knowledge. The IT world is a very different world to that of a voice or telephony expert.
Daily we see IT companies as trusted advisors coerce their customers to take up their version of a phone system. You see phones for IT companies is a very new concept compared to 40+ year veteran telephony experts which means they have no real experience in what makes a decent phone system. What I am saying is they don’t know what they don’t know. Just like we do not know enough about IT to provide solid advice to a customer. A factory trained tech with decades of feet on the street experience with many voice manufacturers brings a very comprehensive and extensive knowledge of telephony products that meets the criteria of the different business sectors in the Australian economy, just as an IT company has the same knowledge for servers, software and networks.
Fast forward time. The world changed very quickly with Covid, IP remote handsets became the norm and working from home was accepted by management. It was the covid period that Hosted phone systems prevailed as the answer to the work from home issue. This was a rapid learning curve for IT companies looking to pick low hanging fruit. In their hordes they gravitated to the brightest cheapest easiest would be phone system that used an Ethernet lead, overnight touting themselves as phone experts. Vast amounts of businesses were hooked by this new story only to discover later it was a colossal step backwards. Too embarrassed to admit it was the wrong decision, business owners charged on with a horribly inadequate product that didn’t deliver the requirement sort in the first place.
So lets get back to my point here. 99% of IT companies have been exposed to very basic telephony systems which means they have no idea what makes a suitable phone system.
Why would a business take the advice of a company with little to no experience?
Yes, we wonder that too, but it goes down daily. There is an old phrase “would you ask your GP doctor about a problem with your car’s breaks? We know the answer is 100 % No, so why would you ask your IT company about telephony?
Lets put it this way, compare Temu with Harvey Norman, one is cheap and cheerful, and the other is a seasoned reputable retailer with 100% manufacturer support.
